Who is Today’s Romance Novel Addict?

Hi, I’m Joule de Karat, editor at RomanceNovelAddict.com.

I look for the subtle layering in the love story that uplift us, not limited to any one sub-genre. In scouring the latest news on the Romance writing and publishing process I’m heartened by the readers who are interacting with authors, industry leader and each other, making the Romance genre a major force in the world. Is that a bold claim? Not when you consider that it’s a vast part of the publishing industry that positively impacts people’s lives and livelihoods, even in today’s economy.

Gone are the days when women would wrap their dime novel with Kraft paper to hide its cover. Today’s romance novel addict is savvy, comes from any and every walk of life, and is often educated. The romance reader now has a voice that, thanks to the web’s far reaching ripple effect, is heard by the powers that be.

No one knows better how powerful romance is than those of us who read it. When we read we immerse ourselves in the story – heart, head and soul. We read between the lines and even move inside them to live there, revisiting long after we’ve finished it.

A good romance novel is delicious and satisfying; we can safely leave all else behind and emerge feeling somehow expanded. It’s as good as or better than chocolate, without the calories!

A romance novel also has the power to live inside us, which is its true gift. It can awakens us to ‘that something more’ that the whole world seeks, even in ways we may not fully understand. We are the advocates of the lovers’ archetype; we uphold the good, the happy and the beautiful part of life that is romance.

Imagine the energy from the positive thoughts and emotions of millions or billions all reading a happy ending. That’s planetary healing, measurable if not with today’s instruments, then conceivable by the sheer numbers! It may not be transcendental meditation, but it is focused intent on uplifting feelings.

Everyone has choice; hopefully each will be guided to find better interests than adding their attention to the mass-mind with its focus on negative news, wringing its collective hands, and adding to misery’s energy.

This site is for Romance’s power to bring emotional satisfaction. And it’s in celebration of the creative energy that’s all part of the process of both reading the romance novel, and of course what goes into its writing, publication and public image.

Let me know what’s on your mind, how what you’re reading or anything else moves you. You can subscribe to RSS feeds or eMail updates to read my latest articles or view the videos I post on most of them.

I’ve posted this opening scene of a classic film as an example of  ‘the hook’. Watch how a master story crafter, in this case filmmaker, weaves his spell to capture our interest at the outset and keep it all the way to the end:
